All is set for the maiden HIV vaccine Efficacy trial in Africa

Scientist have launched the first ever HIV vaccine Efficacy trial in South Africa. The United States National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), have said that the trial is to test how well an experimental vaccine can prevent infection among South African Adults.
The efficacy trial known as HVTN 702 will enroll 5,400 men and women in South Africa. This is the largest HIV vaccine clinical trial in South Africa where more then 1,000 new infections are recorded everyday.
This is in line with the RV144 clinical trial done in Thailand by the United States Military HIV Research Programme and the Thai Ministry of Health which showed about 31.2% effectiveness over a 5year follow-up. Reports show that about 78 million people in the world are affected with HIV and about 18 million are living on life-saving drugs.
