An illegal goldmine in Ghana recently collapsed on Sunday trapping and killing 17 miners. A search for the miners who were trapped underground have been terminated with the approval of their families after they had been confirmed dead.
The body of one miner was successfully retrieved following the collapse but 16 other bodies are still trapped within the 260-feet deep goldmine. The decision to stop the search was based on the risk of further collapse and health grounds as the bodies were already decomposing. Five bodies were spotted but could not be retrieved as they were surrounded by stone debris. The mine will be covered to prevent and future re-entry. One of the miners who escaped said he heard unusual noises coming from the ground and alerted his colleagues, but before they could climb out, the mine collapsed. Burial rites will be performed at the site for the dead miners.
