African Union says it will seize to recognise Jammeh as Gambia's president from Jan 19.


The African Union's peace and security council made the declaration known at a meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia that the union will seize to recognize Yahya Jammeh as President of Gambia from January, 19. This is date that Jammeh is due to hand over power to Adama Barrow, winner of the December 1 Gambian presidential elections. 

The Council went further to warn of “serious consequences in the event that his action causes any crisis that could lead to political disorder, humanitarian and human rights disaster, including loss of innocent lives and destruction of properties”.

Meanwhile, Nigeria's president, Muhammadu Buhari led a delegation of West African leaders to Banjul, Gambian capital with the aim to persuade Jammeh to step aside and let peace reign. Jammeh's political party already filed a case in court to stop the inauguration of Barrow based on Jammeh's challenge of the electoral results.
Yahya Jammeh was born May 25, 1965 and joined the Gambian Army in 1984. On July 22, 1994, 29 year old Jammeh led a group of soldiers  in a coup to oust the then president Dawda Jawara. Yahya installed himself as president, suspended the constitution, sealed the borders and implemented a curfew. 
Jammeh was democratically elected in 1996, 2001, 2006 and 2011. He was defeated by Adama Barrow in 2016, a defeat he later refused to accept. Jammeh is described as one of the worse dictatorS in Africa. 
On may 15 2008, Jammeh announced that his government will introduce laws against homosexuals that will be stricter than Iranian laws. He said he would cut off the head of any gay or lesbian found in Gambia. In a speech to the United Nations on 27 September 2013, Jammeh said "homosexuality in all its forms and manifestations which, though very evil, anti-human as well as anti-Allah, is being promoted as a human right by some powers," who "want to put an end to human existence."
On 18 February 2014, Jammeh called homosexuals "vermins" by saying that "We will fight these vermins called homosexuals or gays the same way we are fighting malaria-causing mosquitoes, if not more aggressively,". He also went on to disparage the LGBT by saying that "As far as I am concerned, LGBT can only stand for leprosy, gonorrhoea, Bacteria and tuberculosis all of which are detrimental to human existence"
In January 2007, Jammeh claimed to have the cure to hiv/aids and asthma using natural herbs. He said part of the healing process was for the patient to stop taking anti-retro viral drugs. 
On 12 December 2015, Jammeh declared the Muslim-majority country to be an Islamic republic, saying the move marked a break with the Gambia's colonial past. Jammeh told state TV that the proclamation was in line with Gambia's "religious identity and values." He added that no dress code would be imposed and citizens of other faiths would be allowed to practice freely.
In April 10 and 11, 2000, Jammeh's government was accused of killing 12 students and a journalist during a protest of the death of a student in Gambia. Jammeh was accused of ordering the shooting of the innocent students. On 22nd July 2005, Jammeh ordered the killing of two 44 Ghanaian and 10 Ecowas nationals by firing squad. 
Jammeh first marriage ended in divorce. he married Zeineb Suma in 1999 and had two children Mariam and Muhammed Jammeh. in 2010, he announce his marriage to 21 year old Alima Sallah, a marriage Zeineb opposed vehemently which led to his divorce from Alima.
