Five cases of Lassa Fever have been confirmed in Ondo State and are being treated at the Federal Medical Centre in Owo. It all started some weeks back when a student of Achievers University, Owo was hospitalised and diagnosed with the disease.
The university declared a three-week mid-semester break for the students in order to prevent a spread of the disease across the school following anxiety and unrest amongst students and their parents over an imminent outbreak on the campus. So far, about five persons have been confirmed with the disease. Two cases were recorded in Owo Local government area and two in Akoko North-East including the student earlier diagnosed bringing the number to five.
Vice Chancellor of the university stressed that the student did not contract the disease from within the campus but from outside as none of her friends or roommates have been diagnosed of Lassa Fever. The Vice Chancellor allayed the fears of parents who have heard of an outbreak of Lassa Fever in the university addressing it as an isolated case of one student.
